Physiology: Using Movement to Increase Confidence

It can be easy to miss the subtle shifts in your energy that occur when you move or change your posture. Watch for this – see if you can use your body to change how you feel, even ever so slightly.

This sounds simple. But don’t be fooled, there is now solid research on how our physiology shapes how we feel, not just the other way around.

One example:  You may have seen that Harvard social psychologist Amy Cuddy showed us a few years ago how power posing for only 2 minutes can actually boost your confidence.

Try it!  Headed for an interview or giving a talk?  Stand with feet planted, hands on hips, shoulders back, head up, add in a smile, for 2 minutes!

Secondly, use your body to shift your mood, frequently – get up and move, sit up tall, use a standing desk, open up your arms like you’re giving a hug – move, move, move. It changes your biology, hence your energy and likely your confidence. Again, all you need is a few minutes. You don’t need a 1-hour workout to use this strategy.  But, do remember that consistency and frequency are the name of the game.
