In a recent coaching conversation, a client shared how she handled her team's success.
She owned the outcome.
By no means was she diminishing their work and contributions, instead she was taking responsibility as the leader.
As a leader, you have a choice - take full ownership of the results, or not.
Choosing full ownership includes being responsible for how you communicate.
Use a simple 3-step process to own your communication, and the benefits will include more team trust and accountability. Who doesn't want that?
Simplify
Clarify
Follow up
I often hear clients say they intended one thing, but something entirely different was heard. It happens in personal relationships, too, right?
So, the simpler the better.
Part of simplifying is being clear. Eliminate guesswork for others, especially around roles and mission.
For your next project, team meeting, or goal, check yourself:
Am I simplifying, not complicating, the plan?
Am I clear on our mission, our why?
Are team members truly clear on their roles?
The icing on the cake of owning the outcome of your communication is feedback.
If you don't hold yourself accountable by following up and asking for feedback, how will you truly know what your team heard?
